HOPE VI - Why?

Built in the early 1950s on low-lying land, Rogers Garden Park and Rogers Addition were the antithesis of the HOPE VI program - a project designed to be physically and socially isolated from the community - a concentration of the poor. This community was built with design and infrastructure flaws that resulted in serious flooding and high crime.

The community was in a state of decline for the past 30+ years. Design obsolescence and infrastrutures continued to worsen the quality of life for residents. High density in the original Rogers (120 units) was at 12 units per acre. The community was situated in a low lying area which while not designated a flood prone area by FEMA, the area flooded frequently due to poor infrastructure and original design flaw. During heavy rains, over 98% of the dwelling and non-dwelling uits would become flooded.

New facilities are replacing the osolete and dilapidated structures and the new housing is being fully integrated into the surrounding neighborhood. The newly revitalized Bradenton Village (formerly called Rogers Garden) will include a new administration office, state of the art daycare facility, community social services, with a resident training component.
